Morning in Mandalay - Half Day
Today your tour will start at 04:00.
It’s an early morning start today to capture an authentic slice of Mandalay life. Leave the hotel around 04:00 and transfer to Mahamuni Pagoda, Mandalay’s most important religious site. The temple’s massive Buddha image is coated with gold leaf applied by the local pilgrims- in fact, so much gold leaf has been applied over the years that the image now appears lumpy in texture. Watch as monks and devotees gather to wash the statue’s face and clean his teeth, a bizarre yet beautiful ceremony which happens every morning at 04:30.
Continue to an urban neighbourhood to witness the daily alms collection of the monks. Clothed in red robes and carrying their alms bowls, a solemn line of barefoot monks walks along the streets to collect offerings from the locals.
After these beautiful ceremonies, it’s time to head to the city’s main market. Covering several city blocks the market is a hive of activity in the early morning hours. Wander through the aisles, watching as vendors sell mounds of fresh produce, meats, flowers and other items.
Finally, it’s time for breakfast! Visit a tea shop- a busy meeting place throughout the day and an integral part of Burmese life. Sip a hot cup of coffee or try the local tea, a strong brew mixed with sweetened condensed milk. Sample an assortment of local dishes, getting a taste of Myanmar’s best breakfast treats.
Following this insightful dose of local culture, transfer to the hotel to freshen up before the day’s other sightseeing.
Price is for stand-alone tour only; price will be lower when combined with other sightseeing programs on the same day.
