ITINERARY

Luang Prabang City Tour - Full Day

Meals MEALS [ L ]

Join a knowledgeable local guide for this Luang Prabang full day tour. Scratch beneath the surface of the UNESCO Heritage city to discover the rich traditions that still guide the daily lives of the Lao people.

The former Royal Palace is a logical starting point for the visit. The building now serves as the National Museum and contains a wealth of intriguing historical relics and informative exhibits. Take a short walk to neighbouring Wat Mai, a Buddhist temple whose gold-covered bas relief is an incredible piece of craftsmanship.

Continue to Wat Sensoukarahm with its dazzling gold façade and then Wat Xieng Thong. This is Luang Prabang’s most revered temple, and for good reason! It is one of the oldest in town and is covered in ornate carvings and mosaics, unmatched by any other temple in the country.

Having worked up an appetite, it is time for a lunch break. Tamarind is the perfect restaurant for sampling traditional Lao dishes and learning about the importance of food in the local culture.

Fully satiated, it is time to continue touring Luang Prabang. Zig-zag onwards through the lanes and streets of the city, encountering friendly locals as they go about their day to day routine, stopping at more incredible pagodas. Wat Visoun is a must-see not only for its unusual watermelon-shape but also its historical value and impressive collection of religious artefacts.

Leaving the town centre behind, head to the Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre to learn about the various ethnic groups in Laos. Explore the displays of colourful costumes and traditional tools used by the different races. There are fabulous explanations about the history and beliefs of each of the ethnic groups, a great eye-opener to the diversity of the Lao people.  (Note: closed on Monday).

To culminate today’s excursion, climb to the top of Mount Phousi, the city’s highest point. Enjoy sweeping views from on high, gaining a new perspective of Luang Prabang and the Mekong River. Upon returning to the bottom take a short walk through the vibrant night market before bidding farewell to the guide. (L)
