Culinary Delights of Vientiane - Evening
Bring an appetite! This Vientiane food tour is all about the food and culture of Laos.
Transfer to a local cook’s house where an outdoor home kitchen is waiting for you. There’s a selection of dishes which you can
learn, ranging from khao niaw (sticky rice) – the foundation of all Lao meals to laap (meat or fish salad), and different kinds
of jeow (dip/sauce made from grilled eggplant, tomatoes, or mushroom, etc.) or typical mok pa (steamed fish in banana leaf).
All ingredients are fresh, locally grown and daily sourced from the morning organic market. Lao cuisine is characterized by a wide
variety of spices and herbs such as coriander, mint, lemon basil, spring onion, roots in the ginger family, kaffir lime leaves,
shallot, and chili. Although Laotian culinary shares some similarities with its neighbors as Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and
even China, it has a particular piquancy that makes it unique. Distinguished by spicy, sour and bitter notes, Lao dishes offer
interesting heat and layers.
In this interactive cooking class, get your hands on cutting, seasoning and preparing a complete Lao meal with an easy-to-follow
instruction. Soumaly will also share with you some secret twists in her recipes, her stories and her love of food.
Afterwards, sit down and enjoy the fruit of your labor with the host. Learn how to enjoy Lao food in the Lao way. Take home the
recipes and joy of a cultural and cuisine exchange. (D)
