Depart from bustling Yogyakarta for Java culture tour in the afternoon.

Start with a visit to UNESCO-listed Prambanan. Explore these 9th century temples, learning about the symbolism of the monuments from the local guide and stopping to admire the three inner shrines dedicated to the Hindu trinity.

Continue by car to visit Plaosan, a group of interesting yet les visited temples. Walk around the compound where the two main temples are surrounded by more than 150 other ancillary domes and buildings. Learn about the Buddhist and Hindu architectural elements found at Plaosan and take a closer look at the detailed inscriptions and bas reliefs that cover the monuments.

After this introduction to Yogyakarta’s spiritual side, venture into nearby villages for a glimpse of its rural cultures. Travel by ox cart through the village, stopping to enjoy a refreshing drink and snack with friendly local hosts.

Enter a family home to see the production of a popular traditional snack, emping, before continuing by ox cart to a small music studio. Get a short introduction to Javanese music and a lesson on how to play the gamelan, one of Indonesia’s most beloved instruments.

Then visit a traditional jamu maker a lady who makes traditional herbal drinks believed to have curative qualities. Discover the secret recipes of this popular beverage, helping the host to mix up a batch then sample a glass of the freshly made juice.

Following this discovery tour of the countryside’s temples and villages, return to Yogyakarta, arriving at the hotel early this evening.

Overland travel is not advised during the two weeks from 16-May-20 to 31-May-20. Service availability during that time may be limited, tour guides may be travelling home, and restaurants may be closed.
