Wander stall to stall exploring the items on display and experiencing the culture of Asian markets.
Market Day in Hong Kong - Full Day
This tour will begin at 08:00. Start the day in vibrant Kowloon. Unlike western markets, which sell everything under one roof, the markets in this part of the world are divided by theme.
Head to the bird market where colourful birds sing out from their cages. See older Hong Kong residents admiring these small creatures, purchased to live at home as companions. Stop for a visit at the nearby flower market where an impressive variety of flowers are for sale. Browse the fragrant displays of Dutch tulips, exotic orchids and everything in between.
Fish are popular in Chinese culture as they are believed to be symbols of good fortune and wealth. At the fish market see not only tropical fish but also dogs, spiders, lizards and snakes- all of which are beloved pets of the Chinese people.
From the traditional to the modern, step in to Langham Place. This modern shopping centre stands in dramatic contrast to the small markets found elsewhere in Hong Kong yet is still popular with local shoppers.
Switch gears and take an unforgettable trip on public transport to Hong Kong. Travel by subway to the jetty and board the famous ‘Star Ferry’ for a trip across the bay. Admire the views of Hong Kong’s beautiful skyline as the ship travels to the island’s North Point.
Disembark and continue the Hong Kong market tour at Chun Yeng road. The street is filled with stalls selling fruits, vegetables and seafood. Despite the larger retailers that have popped up in the city offering lower prices, Chun Yeng remains the best place for locals to get the freshest ingredients.
Travel by subway to Sheung Wan district for the final market of the day: Koh Shing Street. Although Hong Kong is a modern city in many ways, the people still value the benefits of traditional medicine and Koh Shing is filled with pharmacopeia shops. Learn about the uses of exotic ingredients extracted from plants and animals used to treat every malady possible. This is a fascinating glimpse into the deep-rooted cultural traditions still intact in modern Hong Kong.
After this in-depth exploration of market life, it is time to return to the hotel.
Optional: you can have your dinner in the authentic night-time Temple Street market, which has a large variety of seafood and local specialties on offer in a bustling setting.
Remark: The order of the day may be modified depending on the location of your hotel.
