Some of their legacies continue to live on today, evident by the culture, language and of course their treasured architecture and temples that we continue to marvel at today.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most well-known of Southeast Asia\u2019s grand ruins are the ones in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/travel\/cambodia\/tours\/angkor-discovery\/\">Angkor<\/a>, with Angkor Wat standing out as the main masterpiece. Next in line is Ta Phrom which continues to be engulfed by the surrounding natural foliage, much like how explorers found it. Also within the complex are numerous other temples and structures, each intricate and unique. Other Khmer temples are scattered throughout the region, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/luxury\/laos\/tours\/wat-phou-cruise\/\">Wat Phou<\/a> and Phi Mai in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/travel\/thailand\/tours\/bangkok-to-isaan\/\">Isaan<\/a> region of Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>The Sukhothai and Ayutthaya Kingdoms all played important roles in shaping the culture and demographics of Thailand today. The 13<sup>th<\/sup> century founding of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/travel\/thailand\/tours\/sukhothai-in-depth\/\">Sukhothai Kingdom<\/a> lead to a blossoming of Thai culture, arts and even the alphabet used today. The Old City is a UNESCO Heritage Site; an impressive collection of unique Buddhist style art and architecture.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Sukhothai-Thailand.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7333 alignright\" style=\"border: 1px solid #cccccc; margin: 15px;\" title=\"Sukhothai, Thailand\" src=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Sukhothai-Thailand-300x199.jpg\"  width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, no mention of Thai history is ever complete without <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/travel\/thailand\/daytrips\/ayutthaya-insight-bangkok-day-tour\/\">Ayutthaya<\/a>. At one time, it was the largest city in the word. Merchants from all over the world were drawn by its allure and charm. Many European traders have complimented Ayutthaya as being the best city they have ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps a little out of place in Vietnam are the ruins of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/travel\/vietnam\/daytrips\/hoi-an-and-my-son-danang\/\">My Son<\/a>. The ruins are the legacy of the Champa Kingdom and remain one of the few Indianized\/Hindu complexes in Vietnam.\u00a0 The surrounding jungle and flora have reclaimed its place amongst the brick structures after the empire\u2019s fall, giving the area a unique look and feel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Borobodur-Indonesia.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7334\" style=\"border: 1px solid #cccccc; margin: 15px;\" title=\"Borobudur, Java, Indonesia\" src=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Borobodur-Indonesia-300x194.jpg\"  width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Borobodur-Indonesia-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Borobodur-Indonesia-600x389.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Borobodur-Indonesia.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>In Java, Indonesia, the Buddhist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/travel\/indonesia\/daytrips\/borobudur-candirejo-jogjakarta\/\">Borobudur<\/a> and the Hindu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/travel\/indonesia\/daytrips\/prambanan-solo-sukuh-temple-jogjakarta\/\">Prambanan\u00a0<\/a>are two excellent UNESCO sites that reinforce the harmony shared between these two religions on the island. The Medang Kingdom flourished at that time (8<sup>th<\/sup>-10<sup>th<\/sup> centuries A.D.) and left their legacies through these two marvelous structures.<\/p>\n<p>By visiting these sites, you will not only get to witness some of the world\u2019s best historical ruins, but also learn more about the history of the region and understand the culture of its people.
