{"id":7057,"date":"2011-09-12T16:23:31","date_gmt":"2011-09-12T09:23:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/?p=7057"},"modified":"2016-01-29T09:20:30","modified_gmt":"2016-01-29T09:20:30","slug":"cambodia-more-than-just-temples","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/en\/cambodia-more-than-just-temples\/","title":{"rendered":"Discover Cambodia, a Country with more to see and Experience than just Angkor Temples"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To many people, Cambodia is synonymous with Angkor Wat.\u00a0 Many tourists head straight to Siem Reap and make their way around the temples and leave, without discovering the rest of this beautiful country.\u00a0 You will be surprised at Cambodia\u2019s rich culture and other attractions if you experience the country beyond Angkor Wat.<\/p>\n<p>Phnom Penh is the capital city of Cambodia.\u00a0It is located on the junction where the Tonle Sap and the Mekong Rivers meet.\u00a0 It is also the largest city and an aspiring metropolis.\u00a0Having been billed as \u2018Paris of the East\u2019 in the 1960\u2019s, the city\u2019s charm is still apparent today with its wide boulevards, its riverside location and the city\u2019s Khmer and French influenced architecture.\u00a0The Royal Palace is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/CAM-PNH-Independance-Monumentat-Phnom-Penh.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7058\" style=\"border: 1px solid #cccccc; margin: 15px;\" title=\"CAM- PNH- Independance Monumentat Phnom Penh\" src=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/CAM-PNH-Independance-Monumentat-Phnom-Penh.jpg\"  width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/CAM-PNH-Independance-Monumentat-Phnom-Penh.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/CAM-PNH-Independance-Monumentat-Phnom-Penh-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>beautiful site to see.\u00a0 The palace houses two pagodas; the Silver Pagoda and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in the Palace Grounds.\u00a0 The National Museum of Cambodia is an excellent stop if you want to see art from Cambodia&#8217;s golden age from the Khmer Empire.\u00a0A sad but educational experience at Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum will remind you of Cambodia\u2019s bloody past and its road to recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Siem Reap is home to Cambodia\u2019s Angor temples.\u00a0However, there are other things to do there such as visiting Tonle Sap and witnessing the bio-diversity and village life there.\u00a0The city is also going through an artistic renaissance and you can surely find intricate handicrafts and other arts and crafts in Siem Reap.<\/p>\n<p>Cambodia is also home to nice pristine beaches.\u00a0Sihanoukville is Cambodia\u2019s main seaside attraction.\u00a0 With long stretches of beautiful beaches and options to dive around the nearby islands, Sihanoukville is emerging as one of Southeast Asia\u2019s must visit beach destinations.\u00a0Kep is another option for those who love the beach.\u00a0Once billed as Cambodia\u2019 top beach destination before being surpassed by Sihanoukville, this seaside town is now on the rise and offers you another quiet and peaceful beach getaway. Another recommended beach destination is Ream. The national park is a true paradise, featuring mangrove forests and tropical jungles, home to hundreds of animal species.<\/p>\n<p>For a taste of the countryside, try Kratie in northeastern Cambodia.\u00a0 This is also a great spot to try to get a glimpse of the Irrawaddy Dolphin.
