There are two sets of benches on either side of the rear for passengers to sit on, thus garnering the name songthaew (which means two rows). A roof covers the seats, protecting you and others from the elements (namely the sun and rain). Be warned, they can be jam packed with people during morning and evening rush hour.<\/p><p>So where do the songthaews go? Much like a bus, they follow a fixed route. And how to call one? Much like a taxi, just wave your hand, tell the driver where you will get off and if it is along the way (after agreeing to a fare, of course), just hop on. You can help the driver a bit by pressing the alarm bell at your destination before you get off. Why? Well, imagine if you were a driver responsible to take hundreds of people to their destinations each day. Can you remember all of them?<\/p><p>There are also songthaews that run between cities and towns. These will usually have a fixed price and are non-negotiable. Prices are a little high, so this is a disadvantage if someone was traveling alone, but if in a group, the fee can be shared between everybody, making it an ideal mode of transportation for a big group.<\/p><p>Don\u2019t be surprised to see tons of similarities between Thailand and Laos.
