Cambodia\u2019s Koh Ker Archeological Site has been officially inscribed as a UNESCO Heritage site. <\/span><\/h4>

The announcement came on 17 September 2023 as UNESCO conveined for its 45th annual convention.\u00a0 It is the fourth Cambodian monument to receive UNESCO status, joining Angkor Archaeological Park, the Temple of Preah Vihear and the Sambor Prei Kuk temple site on the honorary list.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Built in the 10th century, Koh Ker was a former capital of the Khmer Empire,<\/strong> with more than 180 temples, houses and shrines. UNESCO notes the unconventional city planning and innovative construction technology used to build structures such as Prasat Thom, a seven-tired pyramid-style temple<\/strong> that reaches 36 metres in height.<\/span><\/p>

About Koh Ker:<\/b><\/p>

Koh Ker is located 120 km from Siem Reap. During the reign of King Jayavaraman IV in the 10th century,\u00a0 Koh Ker was an important city and even served as the capital of the Khmer Empire for nearly 20 years. At its peak, the site had more than 180 temples, houses and shrines. The most impressive of these structures is Prasat Thom, a seven-tired pyramid-style temple that reaches 36 metres in height.<\/span><\/p>

The capital moved in 944 AD but residents continued to live at Koh Ker. Only a handful of temples were constructed after this move, with the last known sanctuary constructed at the beginning of the 13th century.\u00a0 Like many cities of the time, Koh Ker soon abandoned.<\/span><\/p>

It was not until the 19th century that explorers re-discovered the site. Over the following decades, archeologists from around the world have been drawn to the site, with excavations revealing more buildings as well as important inscriptions, artefacts and more. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t
