Miles away from the beach spots down south or the big cosmopolitan metro of Bangkok in Central Thailand, this northern city exudes its own unique character. Combining the always charming Northern Thai Lanna cultural aesthetics with modern city flair, Chiang Mai is truly a city of contrasts. What is inside of them? The city\u2019s historical center and home to some wonderful ancient temples built in a combination of Burmese, Sri Lankan and Lanna Thai styles.<\/p>\n<p>Of course no visit to Chiang Mai is complete without a stop at Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep. It is located on a mountain called, yes you guessed it, Doi Suthep,\u00a0 some 10 kilometers from the city center. Excellent views up there.<\/p>\n<p>Another important temple site is Wat Chiang Mun, the city\u2019s oldest temple built in 1297. This temple houses two important and venerated Buddha figures, the marble Phra Sila (alleged to have rain giving powers) and the crystal Phra Satang Man (alleged to protect people and cities from disasters).
