Go monkeys with your animal encounter! Meet the island\u2019s famed orangutan at the Bohorok Orangutan Rehabilitation Station. There are over 200 of these primates there, many of which have been rescued from poachers and hunters. They are then trained to survive in the wild and eventually released. Trek over to the feeding site and see them in their semi-wild habitat.<\/p>\n

Now head over to Brastagi in the Karo Highlands. The area is known for its cool climate, orchids, flowers, vegetables and fruits and the most famous of which is the Marquisa, known as passion fruit which is commonly made into a refreshing drink. It is also home to the Batak Karo people, who have unusual wedding and funeral ceremonies which can last for days.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s shift gears a bit and explore some of the island\u2019s exotic natural locations.\u00a0 On your way over to Samosir Island, check out the 120 meter Sipiso-Piso Waterfall. So, what\u2019s over at Samosir Island? This is the world\u2019s largest island within an island and the world\u2019s fifth largest lake island. It was formed from the volcanic activity from as early as 75,000 years ago. Beautiful site!<\/p>\n

What makes Sumatra beautiful is that you will see many amazing sites en-route to your just about any destination. Head over to Sipirok and admire clove and pineapple plantations, a fishing farming village, the Sipoholon Hot Springs and a chance to walk along the banks of the Sarulla River and see the beautiful green glowing rice terraces that make up the area.<\/p>\n

Now enjoy another scenic drive to Bukittinggi, with stops at Sihepeng Village and its beautiful fields and gardens and the jungle forest of Rimba Panti. And then, you will officially cross the equator. They say crossing it backwards will bring you good luck. It doesn\u2019t hurt to try, right? Good luck.<\/p>\n

At Bukittinggi, be rewarded with volcanoes, lakes and villages of the Minangkabau people. Oh, and due to its 930 meter elevation, expect some refreshing cool air as well. Breathe the town in and relive some history with war sites offering views of the surrounding area as well as stops at museums, palaces, markets and rice terraces.<\/p>\n
