While Thailand<\/a>\u2019s beaches have become synonymous with luxury resorts and high-octane parties you can still opt for an untouched paradise offering the perfect antidote to the speedy pace of modern life. Situated in a National Marine Park in the Andaman Sea in the very south west corner of Thailand, Koh Lipe is encircled by sandy beaches and has an interior consisting of mountainous woodland. 5 degrees north of Equator, a stones throw from Malaysian border and home to a 700-strong community of chao leh <\/em>villagers – Thailand\u2019s sea-gypsies.<\/p>\n

The Chao Leh<\/em> village on Lipe is situated in Turatao National Park and is easily accessible from anywhere on the island, offering a great way to see how a group of people who have been outlawed in their adopted homeland have made a stand in paradise. Some three centuries ago, the Chal leh (literally meaning sea people) fled Indonesia <\/a>for a nomadic life on the ocean, settling on the eastern edge of the Andaman Sea, and by the late 1800’s had established semi-permanent communities on the islands of Phuket and Koh Lanta in present-day Thailand, before settling permanently on Turatao National Park.<\/p>\n

In choosing Koh Lipe the \u2018Chao Leh\u2019 couldn\u2019t have found a more isolated and beautiful island on which to settle. Miles of pristine coast are fringed by the warm turquoise waters of the Andaman where fabulous marine life provides ample opportunity for off land adventures. Back on the island you can explore the three main beaches, feast on Thai and international cuisine and enjoy an al-fresco massage.
