Tanah Lot was built by a Hindu priest named Danghyang Nirartha in the 16th century.\u00a0 The man was a constant traveler, but found the beach near Tanah Lot a relaxing and desirable place to settle down.\u00a0 After spending the night here, Nirartha told the local fishermen to build a shrine on the rock formation, for he felt it to be a holy place to worship the sea gods.\u00a0 The Hindu priest built six more sea temples similar to Tanah Lot with each temple being visible from the next and all forming one long chain.\u00a0 It is also said that a giant snake guards the temple, which was made from Niratha\u2019s scarf.<\/p>\n

Major restoration work started in the 1990\u2019s after it was evident that the rock the temple was on was being eroded and in danger of collapse.\u00a0 There was major restoration work done at that time to fix the problem and conserve the historic temple.\u00a0 To the naked eye, the rock faces around the temple looks real and natural.\u00a0\u00a0 However, over a third of the rocks are in fact cunningly disguised and artificial, part of the end result of Tanah Lot\u2019s restoration project.<\/p>\n

Of course, sunset is the best time to visit Tanah Lot.\u00a0 This is also the busiest time, where many head to the beach to view the temple.\u00a0 If you would like to evade the crowds, avoid the beach and instead turn right past the stage near the entrance and follow the path up the rocky headland that overlooks the temple.\u00a0 Not only will you get great views of Tanah Lot, you will also avoid the crowds and be treated to a view of Pura Batu Bolong, a nearby temple built on a rocky promontory.<\/p>\n
