{"id":1341,"date":"2010-05-04T13:26:22","date_gmt":"2010-05-04T06:26:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/?p=1341"},"modified":"2016-01-29T09:45:17","modified_gmt":"2016-01-29T09:45:17","slug":"danang-vietnam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/en\/danang-vietnam\/","title":{"rendered":"Danang \u2013 Your Gateway to Central Vietnam\u2019s Natural and Historical Sites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Danang is a port city in the South Central Coast of Vietnam, in between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.\u00a0 It is the country\u2019s third largest city and is starting to become one of the popular seaside destinations in Vietnam.\u00a0 Surrounded by mountains on its West and the sea to its East, Danang is near natural sites such as Marble Mountains and historical destinations like My Son.<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s origins trace back to 192 AD during the era of the Champa Kingdom.\u00a0 During its peak, the Cham Empire reached as far as Vung Tau in the south.\u00a0 However, Chinese, Vietnamese and Khmer influences led to the end of the Champa in the 15th century.\u00a0 The city also served as an important sea port for the Spanish, French and Americans during their time in the area, which also led to the rapid growth of the city.<\/p>\n<p>Tourism is an important sector in Danang\u2019s economy, being near to the UNESCO World Heritage cities of Hoi An as well as the temple ruins of My Son.\u00a0 That is not to say Danang lacks any attractions though.\u00a0 The Cham Museum displays weathered but still highly skilled artistic sculptures of Shiva (an important Hindu God), garudas (mythical bird-like creature), nagas (mythical serpent deity), lions, monkeys, and elephants, many of which were recovered from My Son.<\/p>\n<p>About 10 kilometers South of Danang are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/marble-mountains-danang-vietnam\/\">Marble Mountains<\/a>, a group of five limestone formations filled with caves and marble crafts depicting mystical creatures and images of Buddha.\u00a0 There are also paths leading up to the top of one of the mountains (Thuy Mountain) which offers scenic views of the city and its shoreline below.<\/p>\n<p>Just off the shore of Danang are the Cham Islands.\u00a0 It is one of Vietnam\u2019s popular island escapes featuring coral reefs, quiet sandy bays and limestone formations.\u00a0 The islands are also forested, presenting a wide range of flora and fauna.\u00a0 Some of the world\u2019s best bird\u2019s nest soup can be found at these islets.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, visitors can enjoy a short transfer to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/the-almost-forgotten-city-of-hoi-an-vietnam\/\">Hoi An<\/a>, a beautiful small city that retains a lot of its past with preserved European, Asian and traditional Vietnamese structures.\u00a0 The city is also famous for its relaxing beaches as well as its arts and crafts shops.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/blog\/champa-temples-my-son-central-vietnam\/\">My Son<\/a>, a set of ruined Hindu temples built during the Champa Empire is approximately 60 kilometers away.\u00a0 There are over 70 architectural pieces present at the site.\u00a0 My Son has been compared with some of Southeast Asia\u2019s great Hindu influenced temple sites such as Angkor in Cambodia, Bagan in Myanmar, Ayutthaya in Thailand and Borobudur in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Danang is a great starting point if you want to explore the rich history of Central Vietnam.\u00a0 You can do so with Exotissimo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exotravel.com\/travel\/vietnam\/daytrips\/hoi-an-and-my-son-danang\/\">A Day Hoi An and My Son \u2013 Danang<\/a> day trip where you will discover two UNESCO World Heritage cities and realize the cultural significance of these two cities.
