Bangkok is one of the biggest cities in Southeast Asia.\u00a0 The Bangkok metropolitan area is 7.7 square kilometers and is home to about 12 million people.\u00a0 Skyscrapers dominate the downtown area and traffic jams are the order of the day in the capital.\u00a0 It is of no surprise if busy residents sometimes need to escape into an oasis of peace and tranquility, but may not have the time to venture away from Bangkok.\u00a0 Lumpini Park provides this very escape for many of the city\u2019s residents.<\/p>\n

Lumpini Park is a 142 acre park located off the Lumpini subway station and not too far from the Silom business district of Bangkok.\u00a0 It is open from 4.30am to 9.00pm and offers a rare collection of open space, trees and playgrounds in Bangkok.\u00a0 On average, about 20,000 people visit the park throughout the day on weekdays and about 40,000 on weekends and holidays.<\/p>\n

Lumpini is the capital\u2019s first public park.\u00a0 It was created by King Rama VI on royal property and named after Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha in Nepal.\u00a0 At the time of construction, it was on the outskirts of the city.<\/p>\n

In 1925, Thai economics was in a recession following the aftermath of World War I.\u00a0 King Rama VI decided to organize an exhibition of local products and resources to help boost the economy at Lumpini\u2019s current location.\u00a0 After the fair, the site would later be developed into a park.\u00a0 However, the exhibition was cancelled due to the untimely passing away of the King but the project of creating a park continued on with his heir and brother, King Rama VII.<\/p>\n

Today, Lumpini is the most visited park in Bangkok.\u00a0 It is a great place for locals and tourists looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city and into an area of trees, lawns and lakes.\u00a0 Paths circulating the park are a popular place for joggers and measures out to be about 2.5 kilometers long.\u00a0 The park also contains cycling paths, weight lifting areas, children\u2019s playgrounds and basketball courts.\u00a0 Visitors to the park may also rent a boat and paddle along Lumpini\u2019s spacious lake.\u00a0 For those interested in less strenuous activities, a library (Bangkok\u2019s first public library) and numerous chess tables are also present at the park.<\/p>\n
