One surviving gem, however, is the Mergui archipelago in southern Myanmar. Decades in self-imposed isolation weren\u2019t regarded as being particularly positive for the country.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, this extended exile did have the effect of helping to protect many of the pristine landscapes. So while destinations such as Koh Phi Phi and Phuket in Thailand are a favourite with tourists, the islands of the Mergui peninsula see a fraction of that traffic. The result is a destination that ranks as one of the region\u2019s most beautiful coastal frontiers.<\/p>\n<p>This journey provides a fitting introduction to the wonders of the archipelago; taking in beach picnics, kayak trips around hidden lagoons, and encounters with the sea gypsies who make their living in the area.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery guidebook lists the Mergui Islands as one of the top destinations in Myanmar.
