Set off from the plains of Bagan along the Irrawaddy River for a memorable jaunt to Myanmar’s charming riverside communities. Experience the colonial charm and faded glory of former port towns which now have a distinctly ‘local’ feel. Enjoy delicious Burmese food prepared by locals alongside the Irrawaddy River.

Itinerary

Early this morning, transfer to the jetty in Bagan. Today, take a local boat down the Irrawaddy River to the former colonial port town of Salay. In the early 20th century, large oil deposits were found just here and the city became one of the most important ports on the Irrawaddy. Today, the industry has moved upstream to the town of Kyauk, leaving Salay a sleepy town full of colonial charm.

After arriving in Salay around lunchtime, the first stop is the Salay House. This colonial building, located along the river, Salay House has been renovated into a restaurant and museum. Start by taking a tour of the museum for some historical background on Salay. Then sit down for a lovely meal alongside the Irrawaddy River.

After lunch, take a short 30-minute walking tour through Salay. Walk under the shade of 100-year old trees while exploring the faded colonial buildings. Along the way, pass by several monasteries and ancient pagodas before ending at Yoke Sone Kyaung Monastery, one of the oldest wooden halls in the area. Exquisitely carved, the monastery is one of the finest examples of Burmese craftsmanship in the country.

Next, transfer to Magyeekan, a traditional Burmese village about 10 minutes from Salay. Here, learn about the villager’s lives while wandering through dusty paths leading from house to house. The evening’s accommodation is one of four guesthouses in this charming village. The guesthouses are built in traditional style, and even though the accommodation is basic, each house has western toilets and a shower.

Tonight,  the ladies of Magyeekan serve a traditional Burmese meal. The villagers have been educated in sanitation methods, so the food is not only tasty, but safe to eat.
