Take 5: Jo Warren – Adventure Manager

Tell us a little about your new role with EXO Adventure?

In a nutshell my job is to know active Thailand for families, challenge companies and adventure agents, and work closely with them to offer an exclusive Thailand adventure experience with outstanding safety and service. There is so much adventure in Thailand, whether it’s kayaking or snorkeling out around Phang Nga Bay to explore hidden lagoons, or taking to the road on a bicycle north of Chiang Mai to challenge yourself with every turn of the steep and winding roads.

Which Asian destination never fails to draw your attention?

Ouch… tough question! When it comes to Asia I love them all. I have traveled to Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, China, India, Nepal, Myanmar and of course Thailand. Despite comments of people being ‘templed out’ in Asia, I never get bored of the smiles on every person you meet here and there are never two temples the same.

What is the most memorable Asian destination you have visited and why?

Well that’s easy! Jumping on a bus from Hanoi Airport into the center of the city for the first time. Why? Anyone who has been to Vietnam will understand. The first thing to catch my eye was the family of 4 on a little scooter and a refrigerator on the back. The uniformed chaos at every crossroads! Thinking about it a little, if I was to be completely honest, my recent experience on a 5 day hike with the Orangutans in Sumatra is one that will stay with me forever too.

Where will your next travels around Asia take you?

Actually another great thing about my job is the Adventure Manager training that we get each year, this is coming up soon and will take me to Myanmar to pull bikes apart and put them back together. After that I will go to Lombok, Indonesia to hike Mount Rinjani.

What makes Asia such a compelling destination for adventure travel?

Asia has it all activity wise; mountains on which you could spend endless weeks hiking the trails, jungles so rich with vegetation and wildlife (my favorite experience!), beautiful island beaches where the diving is some of the best worldwide, some of the most amazing cycling roads with incredible scenery (especially Thailand I have to add) and endless sports such as rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, rafting…… there is just so much on your doorstep I could go on and on.

Adventure Supervisor, Mala Ouk, shares his point of view about what makes this journey so special. ‘Cycling is the best way to explore Cambodia and this 8-day route takes guests to the most authentic parts of the country’, Mala explains. ‘On the bikes, they will get so many opportunities to interact with local people and feel immersed in the life and culture of Cambodia’ The adventure kicks off in the capital city, Phnom Penh.  After warming up with a day ride to Oudong Temple, the real bike journey begins in earnest with a 90-km pedal to charming Kampong Cham for an overnight stay.     At EXO, we have always believed in travel as a force for good. This recently came to life through a meaningful project on Con Ho, a small island in the Mekong Delta.Home to only fifteen families, life on Con Ho is refreshingly simple: the residents get around on foot or by bicycle, the usual buzz of motorbikes is noticeably absent. There is no electricity, so the people rely on solar power and battery back-up. Despite the scarce resources, the people are incredibly welcoming. EXO has worked with the community to develop immersive visits, giving our guests a rare opportunity to experience rural Vietnamese life while also providing a much-needed additional income stream to the community.However this simple life comes with challenges. The island’s main road, which connects the village to the port, becomes impassable in the rainy season due to thick mud.  This hampers daily life, as the road is used by children to go to school, adults to go to the market and to access services such as medical care.     World Travel Market (WTM) London is one of the industry’s largest trade shows and the 2023 edition proved, once again, to be busy and productive for EXO Travel. Over the course of the three day event, our team connected with global partners, sharing travel inspiration and new updates from EXO. This year EXO was represented by an all-star team of sales managers and destination experts, as well as our Chief Sustainability Officer and Chief Digital Officer.
