Leave it up to the Southeast Asians to find a variety of uses for a simple thing as a hat.

Leave it up to the Southeast Asians to find a variety of uses for a simple thing as a hat. Certainly an iconic image in the region (and Vietnam in particular), the conical straw hat is more than a headgear. First of all, as a hat, it is a good shield against the sun and a great head protection from the rain. And when it gets really hot, just dip it in water and wear it. There is a piece of cloth in the hat that balances on the wearer4’s head that can also absorb water. And as a tool? The hat’s natural shape makes it useful for scooping water. In addition, it is not uncommon to see people using it as a fan or as a basket for vegetables, fruits or anything else.

The Vietnamese ones though are noted for their charming designs. Oriental symbols, writings and words gracefully decorate their hats. And in Hue? Verses from poems literally add life to these distinctive multi-purpose headgears. So in Vietnam, the conical straw hat is also an expression for art.
