The Padaung, more commonly known as ‘long-necks’, are coming home to the villages surrounding Loikaw. Many, as long as a decade ago, illegally crossed into Thailand for work. Now that Loikaw, along with the rest of Myanmar is thriving because of tourism, trade, agriculture and industry, the Padaung women are returning to their roots. A huge influence is tourists are no longer required to receive permission from the government, opening up Loikaw and Kayah State to the world.

Richard Ludwig, Product and Adventure Manager, commented recently after returning from a research trip to Loikaw. “It is simply amazing. Loikaw is one of those destinations offering something for every traveler:  a sense of journey, a scenic city bisected by a river and dotted with lakes, trekking, hill tribes, food and culture. The biggest drawback is there are only standard accommodations at the moment, but soon that will change as travelers discover Loikaw.”

Exotissimo will be launching two Loikaw programs for next season:  a classic and an adventure option. Loikaw is a five hour drive from Heho/Kalaw or a five hour boat ride from Inle/Nyaung Shwe. Two to three nights is recommended.
