Rugged and romantic, Sumatra is one of the best destinations in Indonesia for a wilderness experience. Steeped in extraordinary beauty, it is a place where bubbling volcanoes shroud mirror-calm crater lakes and where jungles host orang-utans, tigers, wild elephants and rhinos. Unsurprisingly, given this varied terrain, hiking is a major draw here. On this expedition, guests will sample the very best of the island’s nature offerings. After kicking off in the intriguing city of Medan, the route heads inland to Gunung Leuser National Park, one of the few remaining sanctuaries for the Sumatran orang-utan. Heading deeper into the jungle, the challenging hike involves some steep inclines and tricky terrain. The effort is worth it, however, for the first-hand experience of some of Indonesia’s finest rainforest scenery, encounters with wildlife and activities such as river rafting and the chance to do some traditional fishing.
