First things that pop in your head when you think of Southeast Asia are: beaches, jungles, warm weather, green rain forests, you know, general images of the tropics.

First things that pop in your head when you think of Southeast Asia are: beaches, jungles, warm weather, green rain forests, you know, general images of the tropics. Many would not even consider thinking of snow. But is there really snow in Southeast Asia? Let’s find out.

Myanmar is an interesting country. It serves as a bridge between South Asia, East Asia and Southeast Asia. It is quite evident from the people you see. Myanmar also hosts the lower Himalayans. Now, you see where we’re going? If you head to Putao in Northern Myanmar, you’ll come across Putao, which is in the Kachin State. Hkakabo Razi and other snow-capped mountains are visible from the northern town.

And we mentioned about the influx of peoples. The area around Putao is also home to a great number of hilltribes, such as the Kachin, Lisu, Bamar and Shan, just to name a few.

So there you have it. Snow does exist in Southeast Asia. But there are a whole bunch of other things you can do here. Learning about and interacting with the colorful and certainly friendly hilltribes is one such activity. Putao is also an outdoorsman’s dream. River rafting, trekking, mountain climbing, elephant back riding, it’s all here. To further learn about Putao in depth and find out more about the activities you can engage in, see our Putao Escape page. Mind you that it is a remote area and travel arrangements must be planned ahead. No worries. We’ll help you out here.
