More ethnically diverse than perhaps any other part of Southeast Asia, northern Laos is heaven for those who want to broaden their cultural horizons. One of the best ways to experience encounters with the mosaic of communities that live as they have for centuries in the mountains is through a trekking expedition.

This manageable sized journey offers an ideal sampler of the area. The starting point of the trek is Luang Prabang, the most tourist-friendly town in Laos and an ideal place for an exquisite meal to set guests on their way.

From there, the trail heads north into the stunning hinterland of Luang Prabang Province. Spearing through rice paddies and forests and passing by several waterfalls, the route is endlessly picturesque.

Besides the nature, guests will pass through a number of traditional villages inhabited by Hmong and Khmu ethnic groups. Other highlights of the trek, meanwhile, include the opportunity to experience the Baci, an animist/Buddhist ritual where escaped spirits are called back to the body.
