Film festivals don’t come user-friendlier than Luang Prabang’s. The former royal capital of Laos has played host to an annual celebration of movies and movie making since 2009. Despite the town having no working cinema, the festival has earned a reputation as one of the most forward-thinking events of its kind in the region. This year’s instalment – held in early December – looks set to be the best ever with showcases of new films from around Southeast Asia and beyond. Visiting Luang Prabang during the film festival is never anything less than a pleasure. December is the ideal time to be in the city as the weather is generally sunny and cooler, making experiences such as cruising on the Mekong River, visiting crystal-clear waterfalls and observing alms-giving ceremonies even more evocative.
