Vientiane - Vang Vieng

The undulating countryside around Vang Vieng is an adventure traveler's paradise, offering multiple opportunities for adrenalin-fuelled activities. This action-packed five-day tour allows guests to ride and raft through the jungle landscape, as well as swinging through the trees on a zip-line. And guests can truly get back to nature, with the opportunity to discover hidden caves, plunge off jungle waterfalls, dine at local restaurants and sleep under the stars.

Day 1 - Vientiane - Vang Vieng (Cycling) (L,D)

Welcome to the wild side of Laos! Your guide and driver will meet you in Vientiane at 8.00am today for a 4 hour drive north, along route 13 towards Vang Vieng.

We will stop along the way for a rest break and try out the homemade Lao iced coffee!

You’ll arrive in Vang Vieng around Noon and have time to check-in to your hotel and change into some cycling attire before meeting up with your guide for some lunch overlooking the Nam Song River at the Thavonsouk Resort.

We ride out of town on off road trails, through rice paddies, villages of diverse ethnic origins, and through picturesque landscapes, surrounded by Vang Vieng’s well-known limestone karst cliffs before crossing a bridge to visit a very unusual cave, unique in its architecture, with secret corridors, wells and underground lakes. Nearby, the Blue Lagoon welcomes you for a refreshing dip before heading back to town.

This evening enjoy dinner at The Veranda one of Vang Vieng’s most charming restaurants.

Day 2 - Vang Vieng Challenge (Trekking - Zip Lining) (B,L,D)

After a good night’s sleep, we’ll have breakfast at the hotel before today’s important briefing. It’s then time to hit the road towards Ban Pak Po for the challenge of a lifetime!

Depending on the season and water levels, we may have to cross small streams with the help of ropes to navigate the rapids. As we reach the first mountain range we make some steep ascends. We hike further into the valley until the terrain gets even steeper. This is also the start to your zip-lining adventure. However, the real challenge of the day starts at the bottom of the waterfall on a 'via ferrata' and crossing the gorge via a U-shaped cable bridge. This follows quite a tough gradient and caution is needed.

Once on top, the view of the limestone scenery is quite spectacular. Our next destination is a 120m high waterfall with water thundering down from high up on the mountain face.

Sleeping options tonight include under the stars on a wooden platform offering a stunning view or in a small bamboo hut which offers three little rooms. Regardless, it will be a very relaxing evening with some good chat and a nice dinner until the need for sleep overpowers us.

Day 3 - Vang Vieng (Trekking, Abseiling, Zip Lining) (B,L)

This morning wake early to watch a dramatic sunrise over the Limestone Mountains.

We begin the day with zip lining. Secured by top-class belay devices you will head from platform to platform, some of them up to 50 meters above the ground anchored in the crown of a mighty tree. These cables run through the jungle passing through the towering trees and waterfalls.

Then take the challenge to master a V-shaped cable bridge crossing another gorge. Continue zip-lining almost all way down the mountain. We will break for a tasty Lao style picnic lunch.

This evening, take time to unwind, before having dinner at leisure in one of Vang Vieng’s numerous local restaurants.

Day 4 - Vang Vieng - Vientiane (B,L,D)

After a tasty breakfast we will transfer 10kms north to the ethnic Khmu village of Viengsamay where after an introduction to the basics of kayaking we set off down the beautiful Nam Song River. Afterwards, we continue downstream to Tham None (Sleeping cave). It is one of the biggest caves in Vang Vieng and served as a rescue shelter for the villagers during the Second Indochina War. Today it is home to a family of bats and the ‘Magic Stone’ of Vang Vieng. In the rainy season we will swim through the entrance to the cave. The final leg of the journey is a gentle paddle back to Vang Vieng in time for lunch.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant before our onward journey to Vientiane.

We stop en route at Ban Tha Heua, a village next to Nam Ngum reservoir, famous for selling some of the best quality fish in Laos.

Upon arrival, check-in to your hotel before having dinner at one of the most popular restaurants in town; Makphet restaurant. Makphet is run by Peuan Mit, an organization founded by Friends-International in Vientiane in 2004, in partnership with the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare to address the needs of street children and young people in Laos.
